William Law (1686-1761) wrote:

“Self is the whole evil of fallen nature. It is the very life of sin; the works of the devil are all wrought in self; it is his peculiar workhouse. All self-effort to overcome is vanity.

“Nothing but God can give death to self. Our death is in Christ’s death, and in His now being in us by the Spirit of resurrection. Nothing kills that which must be put to ┬ádeath in us, or gives life to that which must come to life in us, but the inward work of God in the soul.

“This cannot happen by a multiplicity of human rules, methods and contrivances, but in simplicity of faith in which those who applied to Christ immediately obtained that which they asked of Him. Nothing avails but a true desire and a simple faith.”
